The sand painting art form has evolved gradually from religious designs executed on the earth floors of Navajo homes in loose, naturally colored sands. Since the 1960's, commercial sandpaintings have become an art form of natural and synthetically dyed sand glued to a chipboard support. The designs may reflect their religious origins or they may be entirely creative patterns. Sandpainting can be tedious, exacting work, requiring a great deal of preparation before the actual painting can begin. As with most arts and crafts, the more time spent at it and the more patient and demanding the artisan, the better the final result.
